Possible linkage between Xg and the locus for a gene causing mental retardation with or without hydrocephalus.

چکیده

Hereditary hydrocephalus (Bickers and Adams, 1949) is now known, at least in some families, to be an X-borne condition (Edwards, 1961). A few families with the X-borne type of hydrocephalus have been tested for the Xg blood groups but with no hint of linkage between their two loci (Edwards, 1968; Jabbour, 1968). In a kindred recently reported by Fried (1972) a single X-bome gene has apparently caused mental retardation sometimes with and sometimes without hydrocephalus. The Xg groups of the family (Fig. 1) pose a difficult exercise in scoring for linkage. The deceased maternal grandparents, I.1 and I.2, of the propositus could have had one of three arrangements of Xg genotypes.

Molecular study of a consanguineous family with autosomal recessive mental retardation and speech disorder

Mental retardation (MR) is one of the most frequently found major genetic disorders around the world, affecting 1-3% of the people in the general population. The recent advancement in molecular biology and cytogenetic study has made possible the identification of new genes for a variety of genetic disorders including autosomal recessive MR. Recessive genetic disorders are common in Pakistan due...

Refining the genetic location of the gene for X linked hydrocephalus within Xq28.

The most common inherited form of hydrocephalus, X linked hydrocephalus (HSAS), is characterised by mental retardation, adducted thumbs, and spastic paraplegia. Genetic analysis has mapped the locus for HSAS to subchromosomal band Xq28 within a region of approximately 2 megabases of DNA. In order to refine the location of the disease gene we have conducted genetic linkage analysis with Xq28 mar...

MASA syndrome: new clinical features and linkage analysis using DNA probes.

We describe a two generation family in which two males have the X linked recessive MASA syndrome (mental retardation, aphasia, shuffling gait, and adducted thumbs). A third male in this family died at the age of 15 years from congenital hydrocephalus. In the present family cerebral abnormalities are reported for the first time. Linkage analysis confirms the chromosome localisation at Xq28. A cr...

The Study of SLC26A4 Gene Causing Autosomal Recessive Hearing Loss by Linkage Analysis in a Cohort of Iranian Populations

Sensorineural non-syndromic hearing loss is the most common disorder which affects 1 in 500 newborns. Hearing loss is an extremely heterogeneous defect with more than 100 loci identified to date. According to the studies, mutations in GJB2 are estimated to be involved in 50- 80% of autosomal recessive non-syndromic hearing loss cases, but contribution of other loci in this disorder is yet ambig...

Fried syndrome is a distinct X linked mental retardation syndrome mapping to Xp22.

In 1972, Fried described a large Scottish family affected by X linked mental retardation (XLMR), hydrocephalus, and mild facial dysmorphism. The phenotype has considerable similarity to the MASA syndrome, which results from mutations of the L1CAM gene in Xq28, and this family has since been assumed to be an example of this condition. We have reinvestigated the family for linkage to X chromosome...
